Therapy for BPD & Personality Disorders

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other personality disorders often involve intense emotions, unstable relationships, struggles with self-image, and impulsive behavior. BPD may show up as mood swings, fear of abandonment, and pushing others away while craving closeness. Other personality disorders—like Narcissistic, Avoidant, or Obsessive-Compulsive—can include low empathy, fear of rejection, or a need for control. These patterns deeply affect how someone sees themselves and connects with others.

Therapy can be a powerful space for individuals to understand the origins of their patterns and begin creating more adaptive ways of coping. Through a consistent and trusting therapeutic relationship, clients can explore underlying pain, trauma, or unmet needs that may be fueling their symptoms. Modalities like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, or Psychodynamic Therapy are especially helpful in supporting emotional regulation, building a stronger sense of self, and improving relationship dynamics. With time and support, healing and meaningful change are possible.

Common Signs of BPD:

  • Intense fear of abandonment, real or perceived

  • Unstable or intense relationships (idealizing then devaluing others)

  • Chronic feelings of emptiness

  • Impulsive behaviors (e.g., spending, sex, substance use)

  • Self-harming behaviors or suicidal thoughts

  • Distorted self-image or sense of identity

  • Difficulty controlling anger or intense emotional outbursts

  • Feeling disconnected from reality (dissociation) under stress

Common Signs of Other Personality Disorders (varies by type):

  • Need for excessive admiration

  • Lack of empathy for others

  • Exploitative in relationships

Avoidant Personality Disorder:

  • Extreme sensitivity to criticism or rejection

  • Social inhibition and feelings of inadequacy

  • Avoidance of social or work activities involving interpersonal contact

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD):

  • Rigid adherence to rules and moral codes

  • Difficulty delegating tasks

  • Excessive devotion to work at the expense of leisure or relationships

BPD and other personality disorders affects everyone differently, but if it’s interfering with daily life, therapy can help you regain control and find relief.
